The Science of ARK Breeding

ARK: Survival Evolved has one of the most complex breeding systems in gaming. Understanding stat inheritance, mutation mechanics, and imprinting bonuses can mean the difference between a mediocre tame and a devastating boss-killing machine.

How Stat Inheritance Works in ARK

When two creatures breed in ARK, each offspring stat is independently inherited from either the father or the mother with a 55%/45% bias toward the higher stat. This means each stat has a roughly 70% chance of inheriting the better value when one parent has noticeably higher stats.

Our calculator simulates this inheritance model and shows you which parent's stat is more likely to pass down for each attribute, helping you predict the best possible offspring.

Understanding Mutations

Each breeding event has a 2.5% chance per stat of producing a mutation. A mutation adds 2 wild levels to a random stat and changes one of the creature's color regions. Mutations stack, making multi-generational mutation breeding one of the most powerful (and time-consuming) strategies in ARK.

Our calculator tracks mutation counts from both parents and shows you the aggregate mutation chance, so you can plan your breeding lines to maximize mutated offspring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each stat is independently inherited from either parent. There is a 55% chance the offspring gets the higher stat and a 45% chance it gets the lower one. Our calculator shows which parent each stat came from in the predicted result.
A mutation is a 2.5% chance per stat event that adds 2 wild levels to a random stat and changes a color region. Both parents contribute mutation counters, and offspring can accumulate up to 20 mutations per side.
We currently support 30 of the most popular breedable creatures in ARK, from Rex and Giganotosaurus to Wyvern and Managarmr. Each creature has accurate base stats from the official ARK wiki.
You can use the offspring's predicted stats as the input for a new breeding pair to simulate multi-generational breeding chains. This is how players build super-breeds over time.
