Shift Duration Calculator
Instantly find the exact duration of a single work shift by entering the start and end times.
How to Calculate Your Work Hours
Calculating your daily shift duration requires tracking your exact clock-in and clock-out times, and accurately deducting any unpaid breaks. Our calculator automates the math, giving you your precise net work hours instantly.
1. Deducting Unpaid Breaks
Most employers require hourly workers to clock out for lunch or extended rest breaks. For example, if your shift is from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (9 hours total), but you take a 30-minute unpaid lunch, your actual paid time is 8 hours and 30 minutes. The calculator automatically subtracts your break minutes from your total shift.
2. Standard vs. Decimal Hours
Payroll systems run on decimal hours, not minutes. You cannot multiply an hourly wage by "8 hours and 30 minutes." You must convert the 30 minutes to a decimal (0.5) to do the math ($20 × 8.5 hours = $170). Our calculator provides both the standard hour/minute format and the exact payroll decimal.
Overnight Shifts & Midnight Crossings
Tracking time gets complicated when a shift starts in the evening and ends the next morning. Manual calculations often result in negative numbers if you don't adjust for the day change.
Our calculator is built with smart overnight detection. If you enter a clock-in time of 10:00 PM and a clock-out time of 6:00 AM, it automatically recognizes that the shift crossed midnight and correctly calculates the 8-hour duration without requiring dates.
